Use of umbrellas on the Green

As general guidance the Bowls Club uses that defined in Appendix J of Bowls England rules and regulations for play during adverse weather conditions. This simply states that if a situation arises where it is not reasonable or possible to play, players, markers, umpires and officials shall use their common sense and a spirit of fair play to decide on the appropriate course of action.  However, there are no specific details in respect to the use of umbrellas as a means of protection from rain or extreme heat.

The Club, in this instance, has adopted the following general guidelines and etiquette that players are expected to follow during internal game play should they wish to use an umbrella.

These recommendations do NOT apply to League or external competitions in which other third parties are involved.

Use of umbrellas at the end of rinks may be allowed in extreme weather conditions (heavy rain or extreme heat).

They may under no circumstances be used during localised thunder and lightning as they act as a conductor or in strong winds where they are liable to blow across the green or into other players.

Players are expected to maintain a clear view of the green and avoid any actions that might distract or obstruct other players.

  • Positioning: Keep the umbrella behind you when its your turn to bowl and ensure it doesn’t block anyone’s view.

  • Movement: Avoid moving the umbrella abruptly, as this can be distracting. The umbrella MUST be folded down when walking up the rink to avoid accidental injury to other players.

  • Storage: When not in use, place the umbrella in a safe spot where it won’t be a tripping hazard or obstruct the green.
